Product Description Former vice president al gore presents a frightening view of the future of our planet - and our civilization. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 11/21/2006 Starring: Al Gore Run time: 96 minutes Rating: Pg Director: David Guggenheim
Amazon.com With the fate of our planet arguably hanging in the balance, An Inconvenient Truth may prove to be one of the most important and prescient documentaries of all time. As he jokingly refers to himself, "former President-elect" Al Gore felt an urgent personal calling to draw attention--as he had been doing throughout his political career--to the increasingly desperate crisis of global warming, and this riveting documentary is basically a filmed version (by respected TV director Davis Guggenheim) of the PowerPoint lecture that Gore has presented (by his own estimate, well over 1,000 times) to attentive audiences all over the world. Considering Gore's amiable, low-key approach to charts, graphs, statistics, and photographs that leave no room for doubt regarding the reality (not "theory") of global warming as Earth's ultimate environmental crisis, many viewers will be surprised by just how fascinating and convincing this no-frills film really is. As we learn about the milestone events that shaped his character (including his sister's death and young son's near-fatal injuries after being struck by a car), Gore sheds the stiff demeanor of his 2000 presidential campaign and impresses us as a man with a mission, transcending partisan politics with an impassioned plea for common sense, ethical forthrightness, and passionate purpose in reversing the harmful effects of global warming through personal and political responsibility. Some may accuse Gore of exploiting global warming as a Democratic platform, but his honest conviction regarding this "inconvenient truth" (i.e. overwhelming evidence of global warming that's troublesome to those whose interests are threatened by Gore's irrefutable message) is likely to silence all but the most obtusely stubborn detractors. By taking the high road and discreetly avoiding a full-on assault against the George W. Bush administration (which has steadfastly avoided "the inconvenient truth" with obfuscating spin control and policies favoring the oil industry), Gore effectively rises above political differences with a stern but hopeful eye toward a better future for our children.--Jeff Shannon

A worthless DVD coming from a guy who cheated on the 2000 election. December 30, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
What a sore loser! Not only did Gore try and cheat the 2000 election, but he whined about it for years later! Their is no such thing as global warming, this is all a man made assumption just like Y2K. Solely for money purposes. The weather is fine these days and it will remain fine. If a real issue like this was occurring, we all know that the Bush administration will take care of us American citizens.
Al Gore, stop being a whiny loser, stop cheating elections, stop with the global warming crap!
Al Gore Answered Every Single One Of My Questions December 28, 2008 I have been a long time critic of global warming theories. The information I had been receiving through the years lead me to no definite answer and a multitude of lingering questions. Because of this and my natural skepticism I never imagined that one movie would change all of that. An Inconvenient Truth turned out to be just that. Al Gore answered every single one of my questions and did so with hard facts and clarity of vision. He also went on to explain how a disinformation campaign had been waged to confuse the public and thus avoid the real problem. All of this had been done for the sake of protecting short term corporate profits.
To this day I have discussions with people who are doubters and their rejection is often founded on the idea that "No one really knows one way or the other." These people need to watch the documentary or if they live in the northeast like I do, all they have to do is look out the window. I write this review on Dec 28th, 2008 - the supposed middle of winter and yet it is 60 degrees outside. At a time when we should be knee deep in snow and sporting winter jackets, I'll be walking around in a t-shirt. The record highs and low across the country are breaking daily, there are tens of thousands of new records. The maybe factor of such an enormous shift has been squashed. It is real and we must deal with it.
Bigger than the President December 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
No, this is not Jane Austen or Merchant Ivory, this is Al Gore. The big, sweaty man has come back and traveling the world with his message, he's also staring intently at the screen of his Mac Powerbook. He does one thing very well in this movie: he shows that industry is producing a great deal of CO2, and then he correlates a rise in CO2 with a rise in average global temperatures; this is part of the here and now, the world today. He also paints interesting scenarios of what this might mean for the world, any of which is very scary indeed. But as he disingenously points out, thousands of peer-reviewed scientific reports have been written to prove that global warming is a real phenomenon, while none have been written to debunk it. In other words, there was no reason to make this film, other than to give a voice to the scientific community by a well-known non-politician (since there are no longer any well-known scientists except cranks with agendas like Richard Dawkins). More interesting to me is the structure of the film and the way it influences (or manipulates) the viewer. One scene where he is hinting that the last devastating global crisis that the world faced was the one that Winston Churchill warned about in 1932 is followed after a long pause by one where he talks about losing the White House to George Bush. He is juxtaposing mentions of Nazis with comments on the current Washington administration. Sneaky, or just plain brilliant? He also makes his story even more personal by finding ways to make relevant to the narrative two family crises: the car accident that nearly claimed the life of his son and the cancer that robbed him of his beloved sister. While I'm not sure what they have to do with global warming, it does make the story tender. And when Al shifts from being a sad sack "the next president of the United States" to being an inspirational firebrand, you know that the film is over.
Interesting December 22, 2008 I enjoyed Mr. Gore's DVD. Though boring at times, it offers everyone a very interesting view of the trouble of Global Warming.
Good Behavioral Documentary about a Well Known Scam Artist December 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
"An Inconvenient Truth" is a pretty good documentary, although hardly Academy Award material. What it does well is to show us Al Gore as he travels the world trying to to scare people to join his brand of environmental religion. Yes, it's a religion: "Do your believe in global warming?" is the same question as "Do you believe in God?" or "Do you believe in Santa Claus?" It's asking, "Do you take on faith the coming global warming disaster scenario offered by Gore and other proponents?" It has to be on faith because the scientific evidence in Gore's presentation is (a) missing, (b) distorted, (c) half-truths or (d) outright lies. The facts of Gore's deceptions are well-covered on-line and in the one- and two-star reviews on this page.
What director Davis Guggenheim does so well is show us exactly what Gore says and shows in his global warming presentation. Some examples: Gore says that a friend of his told him in the '70s that if the ice on the west shelf of Antarctica breaks up, "that could be a signal for global warming." A friend? Who? If this statement is important (and it, because Gore builds a whole inference system from it) the the audience needs to know who this friend is. And "it could be a signal for global warming" offers a weak inference, because "Could be" it's not.
Gore says he went up to the North Pole in a Navy submarine because he wanted to see the Navy's data on melting of the polar ice cap. Apparently these data are kept in a file cabinet on the bottom of the ocean, rather than in the offices of the Naval Observatory in Washington, which can be reached by cab instead of submarine. (Gore lived on the grounds of the Naval Observatory during his eight years as vice president.)
What Guggenheim doesn't do is point out the inconsistencies in Gore's statements or cite the opposing evidence. Too bad.
