So far, so good! June 9, 2006 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
We have had 7 cats over the past decade (not all at once thank heavens!) and thats a lot of scooping. Right now we only have one cat, but he is incredibly sensitive to a dirty litterbox. It's gotten to the point he wants it absolutely clean every time he needs to use it, which is an impossible task. He'll actually sit outside the box and meow until someone takes care of it! We've been considering an easier method for some time to get the job done. So, we purchased the Scoopfree litterbox two weeks ago after reading numerous reviews of the different automatic litterboxes on the market. This one seemed to make the most sense because it does not use clumping litter, which I've read often sticks to the rake device and liquids pass down to the bottom of the litter, never fully drying/clumping. I had never used crystals, but after reading how they absorb liquids and odors I was willing to give it a test drive.
We paid $99 after price searching the web. The device arrives in a HUGE box, but in reality seems to be the size of a large litter pan. Setup was quick and easy. We placed the Scoopfree in the same spot as the old litterbox, removing that one out of the house. This was a bold step since our cat hadn't used crystals and I was afraid he might be confused. He did notice the difference and inspected it completely, but has proceeded to use the device with no problems.
He's a large cat (about 16lbs - and not overweight) and fits the box. The motor isn't loud - we can't hear it from another room in our house. The raking cycle doesn't take long, only about a minute. The crystals are working terrific, absorbing the liquids and odors just as indicated. Another bonus is the freedom from the litter dust that gets scattered and tracked. I've only seen a few crystals kicked out in two weeks, so that's saved on additional sweeping around the box. A few days ago the kitty blocked the optical sensor with a pile of crystals from his insane covering, so the rake didn't scoop automatically. This was solved by pressing the button to manually scoop. Since then we give the box a quick look once a day to make sure it's clean and working. The cardboard cartridge is holding up, although I have heard that some cats dig to the point of scratching the bottom, which may cause a leak or tear. Ours doesn't have that problem, but before we placed the cartridge we covered it with a garbage bag for added protection. We then put it under the Scoopfree as directed and filled it with crystals. This hasn't impaired the device from functioning and I think will lead to an extended cartridge life (which is a benefit since we are on a budget).
Two factors to consider with this device are that the hood and refill cartridges are sold separately. The cartridges are a little on the expensive side depending on where you can find them ranging from $12 to $17. A cartridge is determined to last one month for one cat.
Overall we are really happy with the Scoopfree. It does have a 90 day money back guarantee and a 1 year warranty. It has been super easy to use and has already saved quite a bit of time in terms of scooping and cleaning. Our cat is really happy and no more meowing at the box, which is a great relief to us. We would definitely recommend it to everyone.
Thought this wouldn't stand up to my rather large cat but it does! September 5, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Well, I wasn't sure that this product would be that great. I was afraid that it would start stinking and that my rather large cat with humongous poops would make this cat box seem like a pipe dream. I was wrong. I've now owned it for a month and have had no problems with smells and it works like a charm! Yes it can be a little loud when the rake does its thing but its not bad and when my cat hears the rake start working, he runs downstairs to watch it move.
And as a side note, at first I thought the cartridges were a little pricey but when I figured out how much I spent on kitty litter per month, I realized that the difference in price was about $10 per month. I'm more than willing to spend $10 a month to not have to clean the litter box every day. And the clean up once a month is a piece of cake and not the icky experience changing the litter out of a regular litter box. There's been times I just wanted to throw the old litter box away rather than clean it.
Very, very happy. June 20, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We are very happy. My girlfriend's cat, Bogey, is an 18 lb male. It took him about 3 days to start using the scoop free litterbox. We followed the instructions, i.e. we put a cup of his familiar clay litter on top of the crystals and we left the old box dirty and nearby. This worked like a charm. I should note that Bogey is a pretty laid back dude. I previously had a cat that pooped in a shoe the first time she saw a littermaid in action. Bogey is not that uptight. We did notice more smell when he poops, however I agree with others that this is a diet issue, he prefers cheap cat food. For his long-term health, I'm going to see if I can get him to eat higher quality food. The poop is raked into the side compartment 20 minutes after Bogey is done, and then the smell is a non-issue for us. One tray of crystals lasts 20 days. I might be able stretch this if I stir the crystals a bit, especially since Bogey likes to urinate in one particular corner, which btw saturated the crystals and the cardboard box in that area. Fortunately, we PUT A NICE LOOKING DOORMAT under the litterbox to protect the floor. I emphasize this b/c those who are trying out the product should also do this to be safe. For a long term solution, I just ordered the permascoop tray. I'm sure it won't be fun washing that tray every 20 days, but in the whole scheme of things it's really nice not to have to scoop every day. Good luck with your litterbox adventure. :)
The ONLY automatic scooper you'll ever want to buy August 28, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Seeing as I only interact my own "business" as a matter of cleanliness, I'm not thrilled about playing with my cats'. I have tried numerous different automatic scoopers over the years, and this is the ONLY one that has lasted more than a couple weeks. Sure, you get all excited when you shell out 100+ bucks in the hopes of being free of this disgusting chore, but over time (and not much time at that) the other self scoopers break down. Most of them sounded like a car wreck in progress by the end of their tenure (more like ten-week). This one has not failed me yet! It's quiet, it's self contained, it's pretty. Your cats will be proud to poop in these. Sure, the cost of the refill cartridges is a bit high, but frankly, I'm willing to pay it as are thousands of others because it's SO worth it. As far the smell factor- I have yet to encounter ANY odor other than when it was time to change the cartridge. Get a whiff on ammonia? Change the cartridge! Seems pretty simple to me.
In the end- buy it, set it up, plug it in and WALK AWAY. Awesome. Just awesome.

I like the Scoop Free Litter Box quite a bit. With 4 cats, however, only 2 of them like the box. My foster kittens use it as well, but as some of the reviews state, it's better to have more than one box when your cat household exceeds 2, as the disposal compartment can quickly fill up.
2 of my cats will not use the box, 1 because she's scared of the noise when it rakes up the mess (she's not as scared as she once was, but still won't use the box), and I'm unsure of the reasoning behind my other cat's decision.
The refill trays are expensive, but I found and purchased the Forever Litter Tray on ebay for $60, which is well worth it considering the Scoop Free refills are about $15 each.
I've not noticed any smell emitting from the box, nor has the box ever jammed.
