Product Description
Soft Paws will fit most kittens by the time they reach the age of 16 weeks (4 months). Some kittens can wear them as early as age 12 weeks (3 months). To test, try a nail cap on first without the adhesive. If it looks too big, don't glue it on. The nail cap should fit snugly, like a glove. Each Soft Paws kit contains 40 nail caps, 2 tubes of adhesive, applicator tips and easy to follow instructions. One kit contains enough for 4 front paw applications. Each application lasts approximately 4-6 weeks therefore each kit lasts approximately 4-6 months. To accommodate younger kittens, you can trim the base of the Soft Paws nail cap making it smaller so it will fit your kitten's nail. Kittens up to about 5 pounds generally fit the kitten size. Kittens up to about 5 months generally fit the kitten size. This size can be safely used on Ferrets!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful   August 26, 2007

We just adopted 2 kittens from our local shelter for our 6 year old and 3 year old kids. My husband wanted to get them declawed but I don't like declawing. So I thought I'd try these and it was the best thing I've done, the cats are 12 weeks old and it took them about 12 hours to really get used to them but now they don't even notice they are there. Now I don't have to worry about the kids getting scratced or my furniture for that matter, they have hot pink softpaws and it looks so cute especially on the black cat. I would definatly recommend trying these before declawing.

5 out of 5 stars Great for cats, start using when kitten age   April 15, 2009

I highly recommend this as an alternative to declawing your cat. Most people are too lazy to attempt this because they have preconceived notions of how difficult it is to apply, or what have you.

Try this product BEFORE you attempt to surgically remove a knuckle segment from the tips of your cats claws.

I am about to get a new kitten, but my other cat took some getting used to with this. I recommend getting your kitten used to paw handling before you attempt this, and continue to handle your kitten's paws, so that they don't fight as much. Also, know that since your are covering your cats claws, you have to trim their claws yourself; since your cat isn't scratching and sharpening which is in essence filing down their claws, you have to make the effort to cut the excess off.

For people who want to apply this without your cat scratching you, I always put my cat in a towel, making a "cat burrito". When I need a certain paw, I pull it out and wrap her up pretty tight. The first time, the kitten fought pretty hard, tried to bite, things like that. As she got bigger it got more difficult for ME to keep her contained (I'm 5'3 and have a very short torso and arms), but the time that it took her to get used to the Soft Paws progressively became less. The very first time, it took her a full day to get used to it, by the fourth application she was completely fine with it, although you do have to be watchful; my cat is very smart and began to chew off her softpaws after the first set grew out and she realised it wasn't permanant.

Once applied, the product is great. Kitty doesn't need to scratch anymore at furniture or carpet, and playtime is easier on you, no more scratches!

5 out of 5 stars Some tips and tricks   May 10, 2010

Soft Claws is a wonderful product. It is also known as Soft Paws. I wondered at first if they were competing brands and what the difference was. Apparently, they are the same product by the same manufacturer. Soft Paws are sold by veterinarians. Soft Claws are sold by retail outlets. There is a new Cleat Lock System (CLS) that is supposed to hold the Soft Paws on the nails better. It is not available in kitten sizes, though.

Try the nail caps on the cat before gluing to see if they fit. If they don't, you can return them to the manufacturer for the correct size, as long as the package is intact and the glue is not used.

APPLICATION

My kitten did not bother much with her nail covers the first day, except to gnaw at them once in awhile. They did come off frequently at first, but I attribute that to my lack of skill. I have it all figured out now and will pass on my newfound wisdom:

1) Do not trim your kitten's nails before applying kitten size Soft Paws. (Only trim if using larger sizes.)

2) The package says to fill the nail caps 1/3 full. Some sites online advise only a few drops. The problem with the colored caps is how to see a few drops or 1/3 full with the applicator tip inside the cap? It is impossible. I wasn't filling it up enough and the nail caps were falling off. What do I do now? I stick the glue tube tip all the way into the nail cap. I squeeze gently until I start to see the glue come up (don't let it crest!). I release the pressure on the glue tube so that it sucks most of the glue back into the tube. I go find my cat and put it on her nail.

3) Yes, I said "go find my cat." My kitten will let me handle her nails, but she was very impatient the first time I placed all the nails on her, because I was holding her the entire time and struggling to fill the nails and stick them on her. If I just fill up a few nail caps and then find her, they go on in a snap. The glue doesn't dry that fast. Just make sure the cat is somewhere in the vicinity.

If you have a cat that doesn't let you touch her paws, well, you'll need to seek out other people's advice and maybe that's when it takes two people. I do play with my kitten's paws frequently so that she doesn't mind me handling her nails. She lets me put the nail caps on and I can apply them very quickly without help.

4) Save the glue tip applicators. They give us a few, but I glue the nails on as they fall off and would run out of glue tips if I kept discarding them. Just use a needle to get it going again and toss them when they have been overused.

SUMMARY

I was worried the nail caps would fall off every day, but they don't and I am happy with the result. Colored nail caps are easier to see when they fall off, so I will stick with those.

These nail caps did get stuck in the plastic mesh in my kitten's Kittywalk Cozy Cat Climber, meaning she couldn't move, so be careful. The manufacturer warns of lace curtains and loop rugs. I had to take down her structure and will probably put it up when she wears nail caps too big to get stuck in it.

I am very happy with Soft Paws for my new kitten. She was clawing up all my furniture, but it's not a problem anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Believe That These Worked!!   December 9, 2009

After doing the research, I decided to give these a try. My 5 month old kitten really doesn't sit and scratch furniture, but she did ruin my mother's computer chair with a thousand punctures while we visited. She just likes to climb up around your shoulders while on the computer. She is very playful tho, and I have so many scratches from playing with each other. I don't mind, but my husband, who is allergic to cats, will swell in the places she scratches him. After my mother and husband asked me to do something about her nails, I trimmed them and then ordered Soft Paws. I got them yesterday and applied them last night. I wrap my kitty up in a hand towel, take one paw out and leave on in, which helps with keeping her comfortable while you keep her still. It only took minutes to get them on and after we got those applied, I gave her a good brushing (she is a persian), and by the time we were done, I set her free to see what she would do. She went along her business as if nothing even happened. I don't even think she knows she's waring them. I could have cried. I had two people that I love telling me to declaw her and that's the last thing I ever wanted to do, but these have saved her nails and lots of pain (I don't think I would have declawed her anyways, but now I won't get grief for not doing it.)

I am spoiled with a laid back kitten that likes to be brushed, handled and never minds me playing with her paws. Someone else mentioned it, but I always play with my kittens paws while she sleeps on my lap or chest, just because they're so cute. I think that's why she didn't fight me.

5 out of 5 stars Long time user   January 19, 2010

I have used Soft Paws for almost 6 years now and I LOVE THEM! I used them on the older cats my (now ex) boyfriend & I shared, and I currently use them on my two new kittens - only 2 months old! They did take about 10 minutes for the kittens to get used to them, but after that, no problems at all! I have noticed that the kittens lose them quicker than the older cats did, but I think that is because I mistakenly clipped their nails ahead of time (you aren't supposed to with kittens due to the already small size of their nails). It has been almost 3 weeks since the second application (and the regrowth of the nails) and not a single one has fallen off! My kittens don't even notice them anymore. They do, however, get them caught on quite a few things...mischievous little gals I have!

I would recommend this product to anyone who thinks that declawing is inhumane or just too damn expensive!
