| Customer Reviews: Fascinating universe. April 29, 2010 Mohamed F. El-Hewie (Hackensack, NJ USA) 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
I agree that having a human face and a narrating sound spoiled the fun of indulging in the mystery of the universe. The natural sounds of the animals and their surrounding made the narrator an intruder. None of the questions posed by the narrators made sense: what is the ocean? or: who are we? Quickly, the viewer will get a good sense of the majesty of the creator. May be the best and brief comment was that should not only get there to where those galaxies of creatures live, but we must also stay there a little longer. Watching a handful of fish in a water tank, gives you the stark fact that fish like all animals have personality, individual disputes, and feelings. Fish identify each other and react to cues in the same manner we do. In such immensely endless universe of creatures on our own planet, one is in awe to such mystery.
From the 120 ton and half city block blue whale, to the tiniest microscopic creatures, there appears to be a plan of creation that we have yet to unveil. Another great comment was that, down here, in the ocean, nature gave every color and shape a try. Of the cutest creatures was that those that have eyes extended on the ends of long rods, pointed in different direction, and open and close in fascinating design and purpose.
The eating habits of those creatures was also fascinating. Some dance and play in mysterious ways while enjoying their prey, some use aggressive and explosive attacks to hunt their food, and some appeared no different from rocks and stones except of their living nature.
Presenting the ocean live next to the glaciers of the south and north poles, minimized my fear about the melting of the polar caps. The under-water life seem totally independent of the glaciers and too resilient to be defeated by any plot.
My remaining thoughts went to the inner designs of those creatures. There must be missing laws in math and genetics that we need to discover in order to account for such majesty of diverse creature.
This is not the Disney movie, it is a BBC production with eight episodes April 28, 2010 D. E. Hill (Centennial, CO United States) 11 out of 16 found this review helpful
You can look at the reviews for this at Amazon UK. As noted by commenters to the previous review, this is not the Disney movie, it is a separate eight-part BBC series featuring ocean exploration in various parts of the globe. My rating is based on the average at the Amazon UK site.
A worthy successor to Cousteau July 23, 2010 D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC) Philippe Cousteau, grandson of the beloved Jacques Cousteau, hosts this wonderful series. Each episode explores an aspect of a particular sea or ocean, focusing on wildlife, but also on archaeology and environmental protection. The shows have a good balance of commentary and interviews with the scientists as well as images of natural beauty. I just wish it were in blu-ray.
OK June 29, 2010 THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY (Happy Place) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
David Attenborough it is not. To much attention paid to the scientists and not the nature. They also talk to much. I want to see the ocean and nature and not be constantly bothered by them. On par with a Discovery TV series. Would not buy if I had to do it again.
